Periodontology, often known as periodontics, is a dental speciality that studies tooth supporting structures as well as diseases and conditions that impact them. The periodontium is made up of the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament, which are all supportive structures. A periodontist is a dentist that specialises in periodontitis diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, as well as dental implant implantation.

Dental implant surgery involves the replacement of tooth roots with metal, screw-like posts and therefore replacement of missing or damaged teeth with artificial teeth that look and perform similarly to natural teeth. It can be a good alternative to ill-fitting dentures or bridgework, and it can also be used when there aren't enough natural tooth roots to make dentures or bridgework tooth replacements.
